60's pop art makes a comeback on face cream packaging. . .
Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Skin Cream is being sold in a 1960's Vintage Edition package. Second in their Decades Collection packaging, the box and jar feature a "flower-power" logo with all the psychedelic flair anyone could want. The Eight Hour Cream—which was a 1950's cult favorite—appeared in a 50's inspired Vintage Edition container last year. Next up: 70's inspired packaging. Shifting habits of British shoppers. . . The most recent news about consumers in the UK confirms what most thought: shoppers are committed to sticking with the habits they've adopted since the economic downturn. In fact, 75% of shoppers polled say they will continue the new habits. A recent study showed that 66% of shoppers say that they have seen an improvement in the quality of private-label products, but brands with a "strong heritage" continue to do well because they are perceived to have reliable quality—and benefit from customer loyalty. Food and drink manufacturers are changing their habits too: 45% are emphasizing price and value in their advertising; 47% are making the most of brand loyalty; 43% have INCREASED promotional activity; and 42% have changed packaging—particularly size—in response to consumer trends. Namibian meat processor improves packaging. . . In response to customer request, Namibian meat processor Windhoek Schlachterei has revamped its packaging to include a larger product window and an easy peel-open feature. The company's recent research concluded that their customers wanted an easy to identify logo on the package label as well as an easy-to-open package. Arab Asian Beverage Meeting to be held later this year. . . The first Arab Asian Beverage Meeting (AABM) in the Middle East will be held in Dubai from December 6-8, 2009. Scheduled in conjunction with Dubai Drink Technology Expo, the meeting will focus on the latest developments and solutions in the packaging and branding of beverages, as well as recycling, reducing production cost and other issues. According to the Secretary General of the AABM, the beverage industry in the United Arab Emirates—including juice, dairy, soft drinks, liquid food, and mineral water is "witnessing a prosperous period." In other beverage news. . . Milk consumption is predicted to increase globally by 2.2% over the next three years, according to Tetra Pak. The company's most recent dairy index also predicts that emerging markets, including India, Pakistan, China and the Middle East will account for 96% of the global consumption growth. Growing populations, rising incomes, dietary trends and increased availability account for the growth. Consumption of Ultra High Temperature (UHT) milk (milk which can be shipped and stored before opening without refrigeration or preservatives) and other liquid dairy products is expected to reach more than 72% of total global consumption by 2012, according to the company. Anti-counterfeiting workshop held last month in Ghana. . . In May, law enforcement agencies attended an anti-counterfeiting workshop in Accra, Ghana. Organized by the Institute of Packaging, and in collaboration with other agencies in Ghana, the workshop was held to educate law enforcement officers on how to identify counterfeit products, including antibiotics, contraceptives, and weight-loss drugs. Many consumers in Ghana are unaware that counterfeit and pirated goods are on the market, and quality packaging and labeling make it difficult for consumers to tell the fake from the real thing, according to a spokesperson. Organic logo competition launched in the EU. . . The European Commission is offering a first prize of 6,000 euros to the winner of their EU-wide organic logo competition. All European citizens 18 or older that are registered at an institution of higher education for art or design based in the EU Member States may participate, according to the competition rules. Logos must be uploaded onto the competition's website, www.ec.europa.eu/organic-logo, by June 25. Tobacco products in India to contain pictorial warnings. . . On May 31—World No Tobacco Day—the Indian government implemented "pictorial health warnings on all packages of tobacco products." The warnings picture a scorpion, an x-ray picture of diseased lungs, and a colored picture of diseased lungs and "will be rotated every few months so that their shocking effect is always fresh."
