In Chicago Nov. 7-8: CPA Fall Workshop
The Contract Packaging Association's Fall Workshop will be held November 7 and 8 at the Chicago Marriott O'Hare. If you're involved in buying and selling contract packaging services, the event includes Educational tracks with presentations focused on how to increase operational efficiency; tabletop exhibits from CPA Associate Member suppliers to the contract packaging industry and networking events for maximum peer-to-peer interaction. From the start, the schedule of events gets "hands-on" immediately, with a free tour of the nearby 1.2 million square-foot facility of the Frain Group, North America's largest used packaging equipment and processing machinery dealer. (Signup is free to registered Workshop attendees.)
The full roster of speakers is impressive, featuring presentations on both buyer and seller sides of the contract services equation, delivered by and for executives and managers across operations, procurement, quality control, and the entire business enterprise.

Packaging World releases two iPad apps
Apple's April, 2010 launch of the iPad put tablets into the hands of more than 25 million people, "and that's nothing compared to what's to come," writes David Newcorn, Vice President of Digital and Custom Media at Summit Media (publisher of Contract Packaging Magazine and this newsletter). His survey of readers found that more than a third of Packaging World readers have an iPad, nearly half own some form of tablet computing device and "even more astounding, nearly 80 percent of respondents are expected to own some form of tablet computer in the next 12 months, with over half represented by the iPad."
In response, two free iPad apps have been released, free for the downloading (with Android-based apps slated to bow later this year):
Packaging World Magazine replicates the print magazine, with embedded links as well as videos alongside articles that reference them. Download the app to get the current version; click on automatic notices when a new edition is released.
Packaging World Real-Time, patterned after the acclaimed USA Today app, displays the latest articles, news, new products, and videos in an easy-to-scan format. It automatically updates itself with the latest content from the Packworld.com website site every time you launch it; articles appear on your screen instantly, without waiting for further downloads.
Much more information on the apps and the research that led to their release is in the September print edition of Packaging World (p.118) and on the Web here.
Download either or both apps by visiting Packworld.com/apps and following the iTunes Store links, or searching the iTunes Store for "Packaging World."

Jim Butschli, Editor of Healthcare Packaging, shares details of the company's experience using three Noack N 921 blister lines from Romaco, to speed product changeovers and increase line efficiency; and a Promatic cartoner from the same vendor that switches from continuous to intermittent operation.
