Contract packager invests in eco-friendly compliance package
Jim Butschli, Editor-in-Chief, Healthcare Packaging, brings us the story of a collaboration between contract packaging
firm Legacy Pharmaceutical Co. and Keystone Folding Box Co.,
which helped to create a virtual one-stop-shop for pharmaceutical companies interested in using a new child-resistant (
F=1) senior-friendly compliance package made from 100% recyclable material.
The package, Ecoslide-RX, uses a child-resistant locking mechanism that is opened with a thumb press on a release button located
on the corner of a major panel of the carton that aims to make it difficult for children to open, yet senior friendly. Inside the carton is a
film/foil blister that slides out when the CR lock is released, but remains connected to the carton at all times. The assembly process does not
require any heat-sealing of paperboard. According to Legacy's website, the CP is investing in automated blister lines for Ecoslide-RX to
meet the early 2012 launch date. The lines will be installed in its St. Louis, MO, facility, which recently tripled its footprint to 270,000 sq ft.
The collaboration makes Ecoslide-RX available to pharmaceutical companies that otherwise would require time and capital to either modify
existing equipment or install new automation machinery into their facilities.

Cost savings via information technology
The latest installment of our "Cost Cutter" series by Lisa Shambro, Executive Director, Foundation for Strategic Sourcing / F4SS,
focuses on information technology. This follows her previous, related discussion of continuous improvement or CI. Shambro comes at IT
improvements via reflections from the latest F4SS conference, which featured presentations by leading companies including Unilever,
Del Monte, and Subaru. On Del Monte, she noted that Robert Lim, vice president of demand and supply planning, "explained how the company's
integration of supply chain partners in a demand-driven operating model resulted in cost-savings and benefits including a forecast accuracy
increase of 400 basis points.... Also during the conference, Brian Stofflet of Unilever shared exceptional results the company found using
its SAP system to measure supplier performance. Through analysis, Stofflet's team was able to identify opportunities in areas none would
have guessed, but which significantly reduced production down time for significant cost-savings. The system has proven an invaluable tool
for providing transparency to manufacturing snarls."
While every company must implement IT solutions in a manner consistent with its unique business processes, Shambro explains that the key
to success is careful planning and execution. Read the full
