New European marks?

The European Commission has proposed new legislation that would introduce two new voluntary symbols for packages that can be reused or recycled. If a packager chooses to use the symbols, then no other symbols may be used for the same purpose.

Use of ISO symbols will be allowed in the future. The symbols may be used only on packaging that complies with the requirements established in the 1994 Packaging Waste Directive of the European Union. Industry has complained that the new markings are redundant and will only serve to confuse consumers reported the European Foodservice & Packaging Association. The legislation must be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
