Adhesice saves the day
The zoo agreed to supply labels and the winery copacking the chardonnay for Arcadia applied the front label automatically for the first half of the order. But all back labels and one half of the front labels had to be applied by Arcadia. Unfortunately the zoo needed the bottles labeled very quickly. When the labels arrived Arcadia discovered that the stock was glossier than they were accustomed to so the drying time required for the cold glue they used was too long. With time running out the winery owners tried a can of Super 77(TM) Spray Adhesive from 3M (St. Paul MN). "We laid out 10 to 12 bottles at a time shook the can sprayed the labels and applied them" says partner Joanne Hastrich. "It worked incredibly well." So well in fact that they completed their labeling job in one day. "We quickly realized it would have taken at least 100 hours to apply labels using the glue" says partner Charles Langendorfer. "We panicked when we realized this wouldn't work and we knew we couldn't affford $10 for an automated labeling system. It was a ticklish problem."
