With its total focus on tablet counting and bottle filling, Modular Packaging Systems has emerged as the authority in turnkey line integration -- from engineering development and layout, to mechanical assembly and testing, to installation and training. They provide customers with turnkey systems, from small clinical lines to high speed filling automated packaging lines.

Featured machinery at PACK EXPO included control systems from B&R Industrial Automation, the company's automation platform of choice, provided by partner iAutomation. As engineering resources become more constrained, especially at pharmaceutical producers, Modular's integration capability has risen to center stage. Its ability to tie each of the machine controls into a productivity-enhancing central monitoring system has become popular.

Tablet counters and fillers

The EC-12 uses Modular's newest technology to achieve up to 55 100-count bottles of ¼" round tablets per minute. The EC-12 is capable of discriminating oversized and undersized product from good product. Unwanted product is ignored or tracked and rejected from the line. A reject station will take any bottle off line that contains a product that does not fall within a specified tablet "size" range.

The MC-2 is a semi-automatic dual lane vibratory counting machine for small production runs or check counter applications. It provides accurate counts into hand fed bottles. The unit offers highly accurate counts and can handle a large range of product sizes and shapes. The machine can also be fitted to an automated base, where a conveying system can deliver bottles to the machine automatically. This compact bench top machine can run at speeds of up to 8 bottles per minute (also based on 100 count of ¼" round tablets).

The SC-60 slat filler utilizes just 60 or 72 slats to count and fill products into bottles. The independently driven top brush combined with the powerful vibrator provides enough control and agitation to fill each slat 100%. Product falls into 20 divided chutes where it is led into a custom funnel, then straight to the opening of the awaiting bottles. As bottles index the slats stop advancing until a fresh set of bottles is in place. The SC-60 requires no blank slats. This machine operates at up to 200 bottles per minute (bpm) based on 100 count 20 drop slat.

The 48-06 slat filler utilizes just 48 slats yet maintains enough pick-up area to provide full coverage to each slat. The independently driven top brush combined with the powerful vibrator provides enough control and agitation to fill each slat 100%. Product falls into 6 divided chutes where it is led into a custom funnel, then straight to the openings of the awaiting bottles. As bottles index, the slats stop advancing until a fresh set of bottles is in place. The 48-06 requires no blank slats, no striker slats, and utilizes only 48 slats per product run. This machine provides users with up to 80 bpm based on 100 count 10 drop slat.

The 48-10 slat filler utilizes just 48 slats yet maintains enough pick-up area to provide full coverage to each slat. The independently driven top brush combined with the powerful vibrator provides enough control and agitation to fill each slat 100%. Product falls into 10 divided chutes where it is led into a custom funnel, then straight to the opening of the awaiting bottles. As bottles index the slats stop advancing until a fresh set of bottles is in place. The 48-10 requires no blank slats, no striker slats, and utilizes only 48 slats per product run. This machine operates at speeds up to 150 bpm based on 100 count 20 drop slat.
