High-visibility theft-prevention packaging: A love/hate relationship

So you come home from the store with a new toy for your child’s birthday. You know exactly what it looks like because you can see it through the package. You were actually able to play with it at the store in the package to see if it was "cool enough" and the right level for your child. The clear all-plastic thermoformed sealed clamshell package allowed you to touch various controls on the toy through strategically designed slots. The high visibility functional pack has significantly enhanced the shopping experience and aided the purchase decision, all without opening the package. When your child unwraps the present he or she can get a good feel if they like it or not by playing with it (at least to a degree) through the package.

Cephalon's RFID pilot

Cephalon Inc. is in Phase 3 of an RFID pilot program that will involve live testing at its manufacturing facility in Salt Lake City, UT. Based out of Frazer, PA, Cephalon is a mid-sized biopharmaceutical company with $1.8 billion in sales last year. Its products include Actiq, Provigil, as well as Fentora, which is the product that is the focus of the current RFID pilot. Cephalon started its RFID pilot program in 2004.

Co-packing industry assesses opportunities and challenges

The contract packaging industry has no shortage of opportunities and challenges, and some of them were discussed formally and informally at the Contract Packaging Association’s annual meeting, which concluded April 2 in Tucson, AZ. First, the opportunities. One of the hottest segments of contract packaging today is pharmaceutical products, and it’s promising even more growth for co-packers with the right facilities, capabilities, and certification approvals. Speaking to association members, Bill Sharpless said the $400 billion pharma industry is growing at 3% annually. Sharpless is marketing director of pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and medical packaging at Alcoa Flexible Packaging.
