Contract manufacturing/packaging trends

What key issues or trends are developing in the area of contract packaging of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals?

According to Contract Pharmacal Corp. CEO Matt Wolf, “As the industry continues to consolidate, more and more pharmaceutical companies are reducing the number of manufacturing facilities they maintain to focus solely on their core competencies. By outsourcing manufacturing and packaging functions, brand owners can focus on their business, products, and marketing, without the distraction of supervising a production facility. This has led to an increased dependence on contract manufacturers, and the trend is providing more opportunity for contract manufacturers that operate in strict compliance with the FDA’s current Good Manufacturing Practices [cGMPs].

“Within the next year, all supplement manufacturers will be required to follow cGMPs similar to those of the pharmaceutical industry. This is a major shift, and contract manufacturers with experience in the development, manufacture, and commercialization of pharmaceuticals will be best positioned to meet these new requirements.”
