With all the talk about the Wal-Mart Sustainability Scorecard changing
the industry, it is easy to overlook the fact that numerous
organizations have engaged in sustainable efforts for many years. At
these companies, the push for corporate social responsibility and
greater sustainability comes directly from senior management as well as
from employees themselves. Sustainable packaging is the extension of
corporate values at these companies.
Interstate Bakeries Corp., Kansas City, MO, introduced new graphics for multipack boxes of Hostess-brand snack cakes. According to Hostess, the new design represents the first major packaging graphics change in 25 years.
In August, children’s book publisher and distributor Scholastic Inc. will begin a “Milk for Bones, Books for Brains...It’s Udderly Brilliant” program with school foodservice directors and dairy processors throughout the United States.
Before children returned to school this fall, Easton, PA-based Binney & Smith and International Paper Beverage Packaging (Memphis, TN) entered into a program that involves IP-supplied cartons to schools.
This year, the Ace Apple Co. ordered 30ꯠ interlocking, “shelf-ready” corrugated cases to pack its apples, tripling last year’s order. The apple grower reports the increased use of the box, as an alternative to a more traditional corrugated case, stems from the enthusiasm of retailers, primarily supermarkets.
