Huhtamaki, the Finland-based worldwide paper packaging company, says it has initiated procedures for ending its 1999 joint-venture with U.S.-based EarthShell Corp.. Huhtamaki had planned to manufacture and market biodegradable foodservice packaging in Europe and potentially in parts of Asia.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 9 office selected Huhtamaki Americas’ packaging plant located in Los Angeles to receive its 2003 Environmental Achievement Award in recognition of its exceptional work and commitment to the environment.
Polarcup EarthShell, a joint venture between Huhtamaki Van Leer (Espoo, Finland) and EarthShell Corp. (Annapolis Junction, MD), is adapting its new biodegradable material and foodservice packaging concepts to European market conditions; Illinois Tool Works (Glenview, IL) has acquired Huhtamaki Van Leers Valeron Strength Films mfg.
