Top 9 packaging trends for 2013

PTIS shares its thoughts on packaging trends for the new year and asks industry colleagues to submit ideas for the number-one development for 2013.

In its year-end e-mail message, consulting company Packaging Technology Integrated Solutions “borrows” from David Letterman, saying, “Looking forward to 2013, we believe the Top 9 trends for packaging in 2013 will be:

10. Clean machine design helps drive OEM growth and meet new regulations.

9. Digital printing continues to make advances and becomes a reality.

8. Sustainable packaging and waste to value propositions get more clarity and harmonization.

7. Interactive and intelligent packaging becomes more real and gets commercialized.

6. Flexible packaging growing in new markets and categories globally.

5. Companies ramp up new processes to look at risk and anticipatory issues and get in front of the next BPA.

4. Digital media and package design: Social media and zero moment of truth will offer big opportunities for packaging going forward.

3. Packaging enabled innovation and growth: More companies targeting a percentage of their growth driven by packaging.

2. Consumer insight for packaging: Companies recognize the importance of consumer insights for packaging and how it can vary, and expect more data from suppliers.”

The growth of the packaging industry in India can be seen mostly in the second-tier cities where packaging plays an important role in the launch of new products. Big giants like Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Nestle India Ltd, Uflex Ltd have also become quiet aggressive in this form of advertisement.

The plastic packaging industry is moving towards completely bio-based products. The volume of oil used every year in the production of plastics equates to approximately five per cent of the world's total oil consumption. Approximately 40 per cent of all plastics are used in packaging, which puts special pressure on the packaging industry to reduce dependence on oil.

Flexible laminates and films have replaced glass, ti, rigid boards in various applications due to their cost advantage, consumer convenience, easy availability, easy access to even rural areas. Infact "sachets" that are a part of flexible packaging have resulted in a sales boom for FMCG's owing to their increased reach through shampoos, tea, cream and lotions, and so on. Most of the innovations that happen in packaging are in this sector via design, shape, graphics, pouching, spouting and many other features.
