Budget could boost packaging research

Reflecting his commitment to improve food safety, President Clinton's proposed 1999 budget contained increased funding for food safety initiatives.

The budget calls for an additonal $101 million for research some of which could involve the search for new packaging materials and processes that reduce or prevent the growth of microbiological pathogens and that could extend the shelf life of food products.
