The Office of Solid Waste within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced a competition it calls "The Cradle-to-Cradle Design Challenge for E-Commerce Shipping Packaging and Logistics."In concert with materials and design consultancy McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (Charlottesville, VA), the competition will accept entries until Aug. 15.
The concept is to rethink and redesign e-commerce packaging, such as that associated with suburban home delivery of Internet purchases of books and media. Entries should take into account packaging materials and their lifecycle, including the systems necessary for cyclical material flows, the ecological and human health characteristics, and how the physical design facilitates reuse and recyclability.
Group submissions between materials manufacturers, logistics specialists, industrial designers and e-commerce companies are especially encouraged. Winning entries will be displayed at Pack Expo Las Vegas, Oct. 13-15. More details will be available on April 21 at the link below.--AO
