Just as furniture manufacturers work with a limited number of suppliers so do the auto companies. So returns of the costly shipping containers is more easily managed than in other industries. From vulnerable automotive glass to heavy crankshafts a wide variety of parts have used platforms and pallets that were made from custom designs. Pak-Line wood pulp products typically replace wood pallets and corrugated boxes that often couldn't be reused. The Homasote process uses 350 tons of old newspapers/day and even the water used in the hydropulper hundreds of thousands of gallons/day is recycled.
