'Message on the bottle'
"The perfume bottles which grace a dressing table and the beverage bottles which languish in the cupboard speak volumes about their owners," writes Mary Lewis of London-based design consultancy Lewis Moberly.
Her essay "Message on the bottle" is one of three to appear in Graphis Bottle Design: Beer Wine Spirits the newest publication ($39.95) from Graphis Inc. (New York NY) edited by B. Martin Pederson. "The bottle/label designer needs a highly tuned aesthetic" she continues "which transcends function and form into pure image." Likewise Graphis Bottle Design transcends reference book becoming more of a collector's scrapbook of both bottles currently available in the marketplace and self-promotional pieces used by designers. Although well organized into beer wine and spirits categories it's the dramatic photographs of the bottles that take precedence. The 260-page soft cover book showcases more than 250 designs. The oblong shape of the book measuring roughly 7" x 111/2" lends itself to the generally long and narrow bottle shapes. Bottle designs were submitted by designers breweries microbreweries and wineries in response to an international call for entries.
