Brewing up a new packaging design

Portland-based bottler Widmer Brothers employed Hornall Anderson Design Works to complete the brand design for a new microbrew. To help Widmer carve out a niche within the amber beer market, designers focused on the tradition of slow-paced, easy drinking that draws consumers of amber beer.

The design for Drop Top beer bottle labels and secondary packaging reflects the simple personality of consumers who are unintentionally stylish. The result is a design that embodies a confident personality incorporating a feeling of freedom to stand out in an over-hyped market designers say. A deep red background and stylized brand type create a sense of edginess and individuality. —ALR
