Schmalbach-Lubeca suffered a July 26 fire at its beverage can plant in the German district of Bad Durkheim near Mannheim. The company indicated it would be able to almost fully offset the temporary production loss by drawing upon stocks and shifting production to other locations.

U.S. shipments of packaging machinery increased by 8.1% in 1997 to an estimated $4.347 billion, according to the fourth annual Packaging Machinery Shipments & Outlook Study from the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute.
