A blue-tinted, flask-shaped bottle and low-profile pump closure system lend distinction to the new Jordan by Michael cologne. The men’s fragrance, introduced last November, is marketed in 50- and 100-mL (1.7- and 3.38-oz) sizes by Beverly Hills, CA-based Bijan Fragrances, Inc.

Web exclusive: Brasseries Heineken puts another brand in 1/2-L plastic and introduces a 1-L plastic beer bottle, consisting of three materials in five layers and coinjection stretch/blow-molded by Continental PET Technologies (Florence, KY). Separately, Strasbourg, France-based Kronenbourg commits not only to the unusal step of self-manufacturing its own PET bottles, but to Actis (Amorphous Carbon Treatment on Internal Surface) coating process from Sidel (Norcross, GA).

Chevron licenses BP Amoco/Dow metallocene resin technology

On March 15, Chevron Chemical Company (Houston, TX) announced it has purchased the first license to manufacture polyethylene metallocene resin using BP Amoco's Innovene® process technology and new catalysts developed by BPA and Dow Chemical, and based upon Dow's Insite® metallocene catalyst technology.

Euro brewer debuts 'glass' inner-coated PET bottle

New technologies for beer in plastic are moving forward. Among the newsiest launches is in Sweden, where Spendrups Brewery of Stockholm in March introduced its Norrlands Guld beer in 500-mL (16.9 oz) high-barrier Glaskin bottles. Developed by Tetra Pak (Geneva, Switzerland), the proprietary Glaskin technology relies on a vacuum deposition process to coat the inside of blown PET bottles with a clear layer of silicon oxide.Spendrups is the first to use the technology on a commercial basis.

Ferreting out a pouch

When Marshall Pet Products of Wolcott, NY, introduced its Premium Ferret Diet food in a 4-lb size last October, it opted for a resealable stand-up pouch from Cryovac (Duncan, SC). “Our product doesn’t stay on the shelf long,” company vice president Peter Reid is happy to report. “But compared to more typical paper/plastic structures with a 12-month shelf life, this pouch has about twice the shelf life. It provides excellent oxygen barrier for the premium meat-based product.”
